One of the most ambitious and profound works in the choral repertoire. Although based on the traditional Latin Mass, Beethoven transforms the familiar text into music of extraordinary range and intensity. From the serene opening of the Kyrie to the dramatic Credo, the deeply contemplative Benedictus and the troubled, ultimately triumphant Agnus Dei, the work moves between intimacy and overwhelming grandeur. Beethoven himself regarded the Missa Solemnis as among his greatest achievements, famously inscribing on the score: “From the heart – may it return to the heart.”
