We feel extremely fortunate to have professional improviser, Charlie Sturgeon, leading this exciting evening. What a fantastic opportunity to learn from an experienced performer! Charlie's achievements have earned him critical acclaim in both Australia and UK.
This is a fun-packed, educational introduction to long-form improvisation, and improvised comedy will teach you the fundamental principles.
You can expect an exhilarating evening filled with moments of hilarity as you take part in engaging practical games and exercises targeted to develop:
Listening – the willingness to be changed
Agreement – accepting, yielding and building
Commitment – playing with joyful abandon
You will then work towards fully improvised scenes, and look at best practices for the creative process, such as:
“Being obvious” – rather than trying to be clever, funny, or original.
“Starting positive” – this raises the dramatic stakes by making the audience smile and care about the emerging characters and unfolding narrative.
Book now before all the places are filled!
More about Charlie:
Charlie Sturgeon has been a professional improviser since 2010. Beginning in his hometown of Melbourne, Australia, he was quickly recognised as “a master of improvisation... a leading force in Melbourne’s improvised comedy world” (Herald Sun). Charlie was a founding member of celebrated companies such as The Improv Conspiracy and Impromptunes, and co-created the fully mimed Quiet Achievers – “this show is done so well that it’s hard to tell it’s improv” ★★★★ (Herald Sun). A leading actor and teacher with the Australian Shakespeare Company and Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art, Charlie moved to London in 2017 to complete an MA in Classical Acting at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, writing his dissertation on Elizabethan improvisation practices. Now Co-Artistic Director of Impromptu Shakespeare, he performs across the UK, and regularly teaches and performs with The Free Association in London. He also teaches corporate workshops with AndAlso Improv, and his own company The Improv Group, for clients including Amazon and LinkedIn. Charlie has trained with The Second City (Chicago), Upright Citizens Brigade (New York), and The Groundlings (LA), and continues to take workshops to hone his craft.
“Charlie is stupidly talented—quick, smart, with acting chops and an infectious joy. He’s a pleasure to workshop with and super fun to play with.” – Cale Bain, Founding Artistic Director of Improv Theatre Sydney and Improv Director for Whose Line Is It Anyway? Australia.
