After Brussels, Vienna, Timisoara, Malmo, Porto and Bologna, the annual BAUTOPIA cultural festival and conference arrives in Athens! This year, Athens is the meeting point of cultural, creative and artistic practitioners from across Europe, from October 7-9.
Local audiences and guests from across Europe can expect a rich program of workshops, music events, inspirational discourse programs, cinema and so much more.
The event is hosted by Athens-based BIOS organization, and will take over its four venues across the three days with concerts, panels, keynotes, inspirational keynotes, hands-on workshops, exhibitions, cinema, artists talks and special pop-up actions.
Under the theme Creative Agency: Sustaining Culture & Creativity in the Age of Intelligence, BAUTOPIA wants to look at sustainability within the domains of culture and creativity from different angles.
On Wednesday, October 7th, the program will kick off at bios with a special evening of inspirational keynote lectures by renowned designers and researchers from The Netherlands, Italy and Serbia. The highlights include Simone Rebaudengo, Henriette Waal and Vladan Joler (the winner of the Silver Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennial in 2025). We will be exploring alternative forms of intelligence, more-than-human worlds, and the hidden labour, infrastructure and environmental costs behind AI.
On the following day, October 8th will see a packed main conference program at Romantso and bios, with numerous case studies and talks coming from makers, designers and artists who are thinking and creating in a sustainable way. And they are coming from all over Europe, from Iceland and Finland in the north, over, Italy, Germany or Slovenia, all the way to Spain and Greece. The day will be rounded up by screening of the acclaimed Architecton documentary by Victor Kossakovsky, as well as a book promotion and a concert.
On Friday (Oct 9th), the Creatives Unite platform will present an international panel dealing with the question of Can We Go Beyond End-Times Narratives?, involving artists, academics and journalists from France, Serbia and Greece. The program will be rounded up by the “performative lecture” Everything is Content, by the artist and director Igor Simić, after which you can move to bios to see Werner Herzog’s Theater of Thought on a big screen, while Plex will be hosting activities throughout the afternoon, and a party in the night.
Alongside talks and discussions, BAUTOPIA offers a series of hands-on and experimental workshops exploring sustainability through making, experimentation and creative practice. Beyond that, two exhibitions will be presented at Romantso and Plex, respectively, as well as a pop-up reading room focused on the African diaspora with Claridade.
In the spirit of inclusivity and sharing – all of the public events are FREE (while the conference program requires registration via the festival’s website.
