About this Event
This community gathering will center Haitian history, Black liberation, maternal health, and collective care through a screening of Through the Barricades (N Ap Boule), a ceremonial tribute honoring the heroes and ancestors who shaped Haiti’s history, and a facilitated panel discussion on Black maternal health and reproductive justice.
The event will open with a small ceremony honoring the Haitian heroes whose courage, resistance, and vision contributed to Haiti’s liberation and the creation of the world’s first Black republic. This moment of remembrance will invite attendees to reflect on the legacy of those who fought for freedom and the generations who have carried that legacy forward.
Following the ceremony, attendees will watch Through the Barricades (N Ap Boule), an emotional film highlighting the struggles Black women and families face in accessing maternal health care in Haiti.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion exploring Black maternal health, reproductive justice, and the ways Black communities have built systems of care and resilience in the face of systemic barriers. Panelists will discuss disparities in maternal health, the importance of culturally grounded care, and the role of community, advocacy, and collective action in advancing maternal and reproductive health.
Together, these elements create a day centered on history, liberation, and community care, connecting Haiti’s legacy of resistance with contemporary movements for Black maternal health and collective care. The event is intended to be a welcoming, educational, and community-centered gathering that creates space for reflection and connection.
