Basso Vox is a boundary-pushing duo that reimagines the roles and expressive possibilities of the double bass and bassoon in chamber music. Comprising two trailblazing soloists—double bassist Nina Bernat and bassoonist Eleni Katz—the duo brings a distinctly vocal approach to their transcriptions and original repertoire, highlighting the often-overlooked singing qualities of their instruments. In Latin, Basso Vox translates to “bass voice.”Recent and upcoming performance highlights include appearances at Tippet Rise, Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival, Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota, Concerts by the Pond, Music at Evergreen and the Rites of Spring Music Festival. Both originally from Iowa City, IA, Eleni and Nina began collaborating after both individually winning the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, and subsequently, joining the prestigious CAG roster.
Bassist Nina Bernat is a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant Recipient and winner of numerous competitions, including the Barbash Bach Competition and International Society of Bassists Solo Competition. She has performed as a concerto soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra and given debut recitals at both Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall. Nina is a faculty member at Stony Brook University.
Hailed for her “thoughtful and expressive” playing (San Diego Union Tribune) and “uncannily human” approach to music making (The Royal Gazette), bassoonist Eleni Katz has appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Camerata Pacifica, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest. She has performed in venues from Colombia to Carnegie Hall. Currently, Eleni is on the bassoon-teaching faculty at the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Mead Witter School of Music, and she is a proud alumna of the New World Symphony, Yale School of Music and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
