Historian Jim Paquette will present the devastating story of the Barnes-Hecker Mine, which operated in Ely Township, northwest of Ishpeming. On the morning of November 3, 1926, the mine caved in and flooded, killing 51 miners. Forty one miners remain entombed in the abandoned mine one hundred years later. The tragedy remains Michigan’s worst mining disaster.
