Spend a day with Susan & Christina (Mom & Daughter team), learning how to paint your own 2'x2' barn quilt on Wednesday, October 14 from 10am to 4pm at Dare Arts. Hear the history behind the growing folk art movement and learn how you can become a part of the barn quilt trail in our community (if displaying outdoors). The goal is for you to leave with your own completed barn quilt. Susan & Christina are local barn quilt artisans working together to spread the joy of a folk art movement sweeping our nation. Barn quilts were traditionally a large piece of wood, painted to represent a quilt block. They were hung on barns to decorate and honor family heritage. Today, barn quilts continue to adorn old barns, but there has been a cultural shift to display them on offices, businesses, houses, fences, and mailboxes as well, providing a unique and visually appealing experience, while promoting community spirit throughout our area. Each piece tells its own story! The farther west you drive across North Carolina, the more common it is to spot these charming patterns in all sorts of arrangements and colors. It's time to light the spark on the Outer Banks here. The goal of their family-operated business, Coastal Barn Quilts, is to bring this art to the coastal communities along the eastern side of the state. They are working on creating an official barn quilt trail that runs from the VA/NC line in Currituck down through Dare county to the ferry and onto Ocracoke, for both locals & visitors to enjoy.
Cost: $130 for Dare Arts members and $140 for non-members . Includes all supplies plus lunch, which is an epic salad bar with rotisserie chicken and bottled waters.
Preregistration is required. Please register by 10/1 so the instructors have time to connect with you before the workshop to select your pattern/colors and prep your aluminum composite board. Payment must be made in advance via credit card online at DareArts.org/workshops.
Maximum of 15 students.
Cancellation policy: Registrations cannot be transferred to future workshops. No-shows will not receive a refund. If you need to cancel for any reason, we will only refund you if we are able to fill the spot. If we are forced to reschedule/cancel the workshop for any reason, we will contact you directly about the new date or refund.
