cult film night previews our 14th sensational season — TRASH PLANET 3: APOCALYPSE! — with a tribute to our lost icon, Tim Curry.
We were going to show CONGO (1995) as part of this season anyhow, but Tim Curry’s passing seems like the best reason to bring the screening forward so we can gather to raise a glass (or several) to a performer who gave us so much.
Based on the 1980 novel by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park etc.), CONGO is one of those IYKYK titles, which makes it problematically perfect for the occasion. Nominated for seven Golden Raspberry Awards including ‘Worst Picture’, CONGO was also nominated for three Saturn Awards, including ‘Best Science Fiction Film’. Tim Curry gives full pantomime as Herkermer Homolka, a ‘Romanian’ philanthropist obsessively searching for a lost city.
"CONGO is a throw back to the days of the drive-in movie. In those simpler times, movies about lost cities, diamonds and killer gorillas were considered fun. Sometimes, movies are just meant to be fun. Tim Curry gets it, why can't you?" (JasonXIX @imdb)
Police notice: We are showing CONGO with subtitles from the best available digital source. Our evening will start with a toast to Tim Curry. I will try not to cry too hard.
