Baltic Cinema: I’m Not Everything I Want To Be (adv. 15)
(Ještě nejsem, kým chci být)
Wednesday 11 November | 18:30~£6 / £4.50* per person
Dir. Klára Tasovská Czechia/Slovakia/Austria 2024, 1hr 30mins
After the Soviet invasion of Prague, a young woman, Libuše Jarcovjáková, strives to break free and embarks on a wild journey towards freedom, capturing her experiences through thousands of subjective photographs.
Czech filmmaker Klára Tasovská’s debut feature is a formally inventive and deeply personal film. Made in close collaboration with Libuše Jarcovjáková and exclusively resorting to photographs and diary entries, I’m Not Everything I Want to Be explores the photographer’s search for identity and emotional journey, and results in a deeply affective and inspiring work. (ICA)
‘The struggle with obscurity, her refusal to give up, is one of the things that makes Jarcovjáková such a winning subject here’ —The Guardian

Shooting the Messenger
November 2026 – March 2027
Films on Photographers, Photographers on Film. What drives photographers to frame, to capture, to record? Sometimes compulsion, sometimes necessity, always curiosity.
Across five documentaries, this season looks at photography and photographers – their desires and struggles, passions and fears – to accompany Baltic’s current exhibition Tish Murtha & Kuba Ryniewicz: Close to Home.
The films propose photography as a lifetime’s quest and suggest that for many photographers – whether railing against the system, documenting their communities or pushing the boundaries of the medium – the more they take photographs, the more they know themselves.
