Annemarie's story:
"I'm half Lithuanian, and my childhood was my Bobutė's garden. She came to Australia from Žemaitija, in Lithuania's north-west, and she brought it with her: broad beans and dill, apple and quince trees, birch and roses, feijoas, greengage plums, peaches, asparagus, horseradish, even rue. I watched her carry it all into the kitchen and turn it into the food of home: potatoes, fish, rich pork and sour cream, hearty and warming. Those flavours were comfort to me then, and they still are.
Last year my father took us all to Lithuania for the first time. We met our family and lived as they live, in their village. We couldn't speak each other's language, but we shared food, and around the table that was enough. There was so much connection and love.
I came home unable to let it go. It's in the toasted linseed salt I sprinkle on potatoes, the bay leaves I forage and hang to dry, the patterned silk scarves in my hair, the twisted willow and jasmine vine I bend into wreaths. Food and flowers have always been woven together for me, and this night is where they meet: my Bobutė's dishes from Žemaitija, cooked and shared with you."
