GCC is thrilled to announce we will be hosting a FREE community screening of the “Bad River” documentary. At its core, this film is the story of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa's decades-long fight for sovereignty, land, and water, set against a legacy of broken treaties that stretches back generations. Understanding that history isn't separate from the environmental stakes, it's an essential foundation that too many of us never learned about.
With Enbridge's Line 5 dominating headlines all summer — leaks, lawsuits, and a legal fight far from over — this film has never been more timely, or more necessary. Communities are waking up to the consequences from developments like pipelines and data centers. We have much to learn from the Bad River Band as we come together to push back and protect our communities.
Following the film presentation, there will be a discussion panel to examine the importance of the film and provide an update on the issues with Line 5 and ongoing legal action.
About the film:
BAD RIVER, narrated by Quannah Chasing Horse and Academy-Award nominee, Edward Norton; written and directed by award-winning filmmaker, Mary Mazzio; and produced by Grant Hill (Owner of the Atlanta Hawks) and Allison Abner (writer for Narcos, West Wing and descendant of the Stockbridge Munsee Band), is a new documentary film which chronicles the Wisconsin-based Bad River Band and its ongoing fight for sovereignty, a story which unfolds in a groundbreaking way through a series of shocking revelations, devastating losses, and a powerful legacy of defiance and resilience, which includes a David vs. Goliath battle to save Lake Superior, the largest freshwater resource in America. As Eldred Corbine, a Bad River Tribal Elder declares: “We gotta protect it… die for it, if we have to.”
Doors will open at 5:30pm. Film screening will begin at 6:30pm.
TICKETS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT. Each attendee must have a ticket reserved in advance and presented at the door. Walk ins will not be admitted.
***Any proceeds beyond covering the costs of this event will be donated to the Bad River Band.***
