BACKCOUNTRY & OVERLAND MEDICAL SKILLS
A Two-Day Hands-On Medical Course for Overlanders, Campers, Off-Roaders & Outdoor Travelers*
Cost: $50 per participant. Contact JC for payment.
The course will run from 8a-4p each day. Please bring your lunch. Please RSVP so we can prepare for the course.
Backcountry & Overland Medical Skills is a two-day, hands-on course designed for people who camp, overland, off-road, hunt, hike, or travel in places where professional medical care may not be immediately available.
The focus of this course is practical medical care in places where help may be delayed. You’ll learn how to evaluate what’s happening, work with the equipment and resources available to you, and make sound decisions when you may be on your own for a while.
No previous medical experience is required.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Patient Assessment & Remote Decision-Making: What happened? How sick or injured are they? What needs to be addressed immediately? Learn a practical approach to assessing a patient, recognizing changes in their condition, monitoring them over time, and deciding whether the problem can be managed where you are or requires evacuation.
Bleeding, Shock & Immediate Life Threats: Bleeding control- direct pressure, wound packing, tourniquets, airway and breathing basics, shock, and recognizing when a patient is becoming unstable.
Trauma, Vehicle Incidents & Musculoskeletal Injuries: Head injuries, chest and abdominal trauma, fractures, sprains, dislocations, splinting, wounds, burns, and patient movement. We will also discuss the unique risks surrounding off-road vehicle accidents and basic extrication considerations, including scene hazards, vehicle stabilization, knowing the limitations of your tools, and understanding when attempting to move or remove someone could make the situation worse.
Environmental & Common Medical Emergencies: Heat illness, hypothermia, cold exposure, carbon monoxide poisoning, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies, seizures, chest pain, stroke, and altered mental status. We will also discuss the risks associated with heaters, stoves, generators, vehicles, and enclosed sleeping areas during cold-weather camping.
Medical Kits & Improvisation: We will discuss useful equipment, what different pieces of gear are designed to do, their limitations, and how to improvise when the equipment you want isn't available. Owning medical gear is not the same as knowing how to use it, and throughout the course we will keep coming back to one important question: What if you don't have it?
Evacuation, Communication & Scenarios: We will discuss communicating when cell service is limited, providing useful information to rescuers, prolonged patient monitoring, and making evacuation decisions when conditions are changing. Students will also work through realistic scenarios that combine the skills and decision-making covered throughout the course.
HANDS-ON TRAINING
This course is designed to be practical and interactive. Students will practice medical skills and work through realistic situations based on problems that can occur while camping, overlanding, off-roading, or traveling away from immediate emergency services.
