WHAT: The 3rd Annual Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Home Run Derby, presented by Visit Luzerne County and the City of Wilkes-Barre. This year notes the 100th anniversary of Ruth’s legendary 650-Ft. home run into Kirby Park.WHEN: Saturday, October 10. County vs. City game at 11 a.m. Derby opening ceremonies at 12 noon. Women’s derby at approximately 12:20 p.m. Men’s derby at approximately 1:30 p.m.
SPECIAL FESTIVITIES: In honor of the 100th anniversary, Babe Ruth’s grandson, Tom Stevens, will be attending the Derby. Mr. Stevens will say a few words during the pre-derby ceremonies and will also throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown and Wilkes-Barre City Council will proclaim Oct. 12 “Babe Ruth Day” in the City of Wilkes-Barre, and Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo and Luzerne County Council will proclaim Oct. 12 “Babe Ruth Day” in Luzerne County. Mayor Brown will also present Stevens with a Key to the City. Food vendors and “Champ,” the official mascot of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, will be on hand.
DERBY DETAILS: The Derby is open to all men and women, ages 16 and up, who feel they are capable of launching a ball out of the ballpark. (There will be a male/female derby, and the distance of the fence will be modified for the women.) The Derby will offer “Sultan of Swat” awards for the male and female contestants who hit the longest home runs and “Bambino” awards for the male and female contestants who hit the most home runs. Participants will be eligible to win both awards. Home runs will be measured using Rapsodo 2.0 technology, courtesy of Russ Canzler Sports
