About this Event
The City of Birmingham's Office of Public Affairs invites you to AWAKEN 2026. This year's annual tribute honors the Foot Soldiers and Activists of 1963.
Created as part of Magic City Classic Week, AWAKEN sparks dialogue, offers awareness, and lifts up Birmingham's legacy of activism, leadership, and community. Each year, the program brings people together to reflect on history and honor local changemakers who embody the spirit of service and justice.
This year's program, themed "Passing the Torch," brings generations together in song, story, and conversation. The morning will bring Birmingham's youth to the forefront in receipt of the legacy forged by the Foot Soldiers and Civil Rights Activists of 1963. A panel discussion will feature Mayor Randall L. Woodfin and activists Dr. Carolyn McKinstry and Ms. Janice Kelsey. The program will also include the presentation of the Putting People First Award with remarks from the Civil Rights Activist Committee of the Foot Soldiers.
Join us as we honor those who lit the way and pass the torch to the next generation.
