About this Event

Awake in the Dream · New Moon in Scorpio

Awake in the Dream is a ceremonial dreaming journey.

Luke Kalani, a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and ceremonial artist. Having held over a hundred ceremonies in Perth since 2019, with thousands of participants now sitting in his spaces, he weaves plant medicine, sound healing, frequency and song to create a unique self-healing journey.

Blue lotus opens the dreaming. Breath takes you under. Sound holds you there while you see.

The moon

The sky is dark that night. New moon in Scorpio.

A new moon is the start of a lunar cycle, the night the moon sits between the earth and the sun and disappears from the sky completely. It has always been the night for beginnings, for planting something in the dark before anything can be seen.

Scorpio is a water sign, and it is the deepest of them. It rules what moves below the surface: the things we carry and never speak about, the endings that make room for what comes next. A Scorpio new moon begins underneath.

Two planets are also moving backwards through the sky, Mercury in Scorpio and Venus in Libra. Retrograde is an optical effect, a planet appearing to reverse from where we stand on earth, and astrologers read it as a time for going back over things. Old conversations. Old loves. Old patterns you thought you had finished with.

A month for looking at what you are still holding. A strong night for putting it down.

The theme

Surrender.

Most people know how to talk about letting go. They have read about it. They have said the words. And still the shoulders sit up near the ears, the jaw stays set, and the hands keep a grip on something long after it stopped being useful.

Something gets set down in this room. The new moon begins in the space it leaves, with your hands empty enough to hold what comes next.

That is the whole theme. Nothing more complicated.

The blue lotus

We begin with blue lotus. It works slowly, which is why it goes in early, before anything else starts.

The limbs get heavy first. Then the eyelids. The mind goes quiet without being told to, and images begin arriving on their own, the way they do in the half hour before sleep.

The Egyptians drank it before dreaming and before ritual. That is what we are doing.

You stay aware and entirely yourself. The door to the dreaming just opens wider than usual. And if you drift into sleep, nothing is missed. That is the medicine working.

The breath

Restorative. Gentle, guided, aimed at settling the nervous system so that the sound has somewhere to land.

You will not be pushed. Nobody in this room is trying to break you open.

The dreaming

This is the part that is different.

We go looking for what has not happened yet.

Guided, in the dark, with sound underneath. A place is built and you go and stand in it. The life, the room, the body, the person you become on the other side of the thing you keep carrying. You arrive in it and look around.

Some people see it in detail. Some people feel it before they see anything. Both count.

The sound

A journey of layered live sound, then voice and guitar.

Sound moves through the body before the mind has a chance to argue with it. In the dreaming state it goes further and it goes faster. Things arrive fully formed. People come back up holding something specific, and almost never the thing they expected to be holding.

The vow

At the end, before anyone speaks, you turn over a card and write one sentence. Present tense. Written by the one you are as you come back up.

One sentence. Scorpio does not need it explained.

The moon turns full in Gemini on the 24th of November. That is when you read it again.

The flow of the night

You arrive at half past six and the room is already lit. Low, warm, no overheads. Music playing before you cross the door.

Frankincense at the hands, drawn up over the heart. Shoes off. Phone off.

You leave the week at the door.

The lotus goes in early. So you drink, find your spot, and we begin to settle.

Half an hour to yourself. Low light, quiet, something warm in your hands, a card to write on if something wants to be written. Most people have not been given the permission of stillness in a very long time. That permission is part of the medicine.

We open in circle.

Then you lie down.

Breath first, then the dreaming, then the sound, and in we go. Deep.

Then we come back. Slowly, together, breath by breath, until the room is one sound.

There is music in the background and half an hour to sit in it before anyone has to be anywhere.

What you leave with

A picture. Most people describe it as having seen something they had only ever talked about.

One sentence, in your own hand, written from inside.

Connected to a room of strangers who stopped being strangers somewhere around eight o’clock.

And a card to take home, so that Saturday night does not evaporate by Tuesday.

Who this is for

You do not need experience. You do not need to be flexible, spiritual, or able to meditate. Roughly half the room each month is there for the first time, and we welcome them out loud so nobody sits there wondering.

You do not need to be able to visualise. Plenty of people cannot see much of anything and still leave with the thing they came for.

You do not need to know what any of this means. Come and find out.

Before you come

  • Eat something a few hours before and arrive light
  • No alcohol that day. Blue lotus does its own work and does not need the company
  • Wear something warm and soft that you can lie down in
  • Bring a water bottle
  • Bring an eye mask if you like the dark
  • Bring a mat, cushions and blankets. There are a few spare (message before the event if you need one)
  • You will be soft and slow afterwards. Give yourself somewhere quiet to go. Do not book anything at ten
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or on prescribed Medic*tion, message me before you book and we will work out whether the lotus is right for you
