Ava Mendoza, ena najbolj cenjenih ameriških nekonvencionalnih kitaristk, ki smo jo v Cerknem lani slišali v triu z Williamom Parkerjem in Hamidom Drakom, se k nam vrača s solo nastopom. Dejavna je kot sodelavka glasbenikov iz širokega žanrskega polja, od art-rocka do jazza in eksperimenta, a tudi kot solo izvajalka, ki v prepoznavnem izrazu povezuje vrsto zvrsti in slogov igranja. Kljub žanrski širini ima v njeni zvočni sliki opazno vlogo t. i. »roots music«, torej žanri, kot so folk, country in blues, ki se jih loteva s prijemi, znanimi iz jazza in improvizacije. Slišali bomo skladbe s hvaljenega drugega solo albuma The Circular Train (2024). Pevka Irena Z. Tomažin in multiinštrumentalist Andraž Mazi bosta predstavila projekt Another Crying Game. Kot že naslov nakazuje, gre za nadaljevanje zelo opaženega in hvaljenega albuma iT, Crying Games (2011), ki ga je pevka, znana tudi kot plesalka, zastavila kot stičišče številnih umetnostnih praks, s katerimi se ukvarja. Nekatere pesmi z novega albuma so bile ustvarjene za plesno-gledališke predstave, a so kasneje dobile nova besedila in dodatne melodije, druge pa so začele nastajati že na začetku projekta iT kot kratki fragmenti. Album je med kritiki požel same pohvale.

Ava Mendoza – one of the most respected American unconventional guitarists, who we heard in Cerkno last year in a trio with William Parker and Hamid Drake – returns with a solo performance. She is active both as a collaborator with musicians across a wide spectrum of genres – ranging from art-rock to jazz and experimental music – and as a solo artist whose distinctive style blends various genres and playing techniques. Despite this breadth of genres, »roots music« (folk, country and blues) plays a significant role in her soundscape, approached through techniques drawn from jazz and improvisation. We will hear tracks from her acclaimed second solo album, The Circular Train (2024). Vocalist Irena Z. Tomažin and multi-instrumentalist Andraž Mazi will present the project Another Crying Game. As the title suggests, this is the follow-up of the highly acclaimed album iT, Crying Games (2011), which the vocalist – also known as a dancer – conceived as a meeting point for the various artistic practices she engages in. Some songs on the new album were created for dance or theater performances but were later given new lyrics and additional melodies, while others originated as short fragments at the very beginning of the iT project. The album has received nothing but praise from critics.
