About this Event

Ever wonder why your garden goes quiet in the fall, or where migrating songbirds actually find fuel when flowers start to fade?

Join Redstart Ecological Systems Inc. for a guided autumn expedition through Jackson Park to uncover how late-blooming flora, ripening seed heads, and urban creek corridors sustain our local wildlife through migration and into winter.

Whether you are an avid birdwatcher, a curious gardener, or just looking to spend a crisp Sunday morning outdoors, this walk offers an engaging, interactive look at Jackson Creek’s living web.

What We’ll Be Doing On The Trail

  • Spot Migrating Birds: Scan the water, forest understory, and canopy for resting and refuel-seeking songbirds, waterfowl, and winter residents.
  • Play "Seed Detective": Get hands-on with post-bloom asters, goldenrods, and milkweeds to see how seed shapes reveal their dispersal strategies—from wind-borne parachutes to hitchhiking burs.
  • Follow the "Ecological Highway": Trace the Jackson Creek corridor to discover how forested waterways act as critical lifeline routes for wildlife navigating urban Peterborough.
  • Track Late-Season Pollinators: Search sunny meadow pockets for late-blooming flowers sustaining bees and migrating monarch butterflies.
  • Decode Layered Habitats: Learn how to "read" a landscape and spot the micro-habitats birds depend on for food and shelter.

Take Habitat Home Every registered participant receives an educational field guide and a curated native seed pack, complete with cold-stratification and winter-sowing instructions so you can start growing high-value bird habitat right in your own garden this year.
