About this Event
Leader: Boot Boutwell
Pace: Slow
Difficulty: Moderate, with some rocky inclines with uneven surfaces.
Appropriate for: All. Children ages 10+ welcome if accompanied by an adult.
About Boot: Roland “Boot” Boutwell, a freelance itinerant naturalist, has been leading nature walks for the Friends of the Fells for over 25 years. He has also led walks and/or taught botany programs for a number of other organizations including The Trustees of Reservations, Arlington Community Education, The Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions, Winchester public schools, Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester, The New England Wild Flower Society and the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
About the walk: We will take a walk in the Long Pond area searching for plants that are still in flower as well as plants that are in fruit. We’ll also look for winter weeds, those hardy herbaceous (non-woody) plants whose skeletons decorate the autumn and winter landscape. And with Halloween only 10 days away, we’ll keep our eyes out for witches, ghosts and skeletons. As usual, there will be a good dose of natural history about the plants we see, as well as a poem, or two or three! Meet at the Long Pond parking lot on South Border Rd. (opposite #532) in Winchester. Steady rain cancels. Leader: Boot Boutwell (781-729-4712)
Arrive early, parking may be tight.
Steady rain postpones.
**Please do not register unless you can absolutely attend this walk. We often have waitlists and would like as many folks as possible to be able to attend.**

Dogs: This program is not suitable for our furry friends (it's a moderate hike with uneven terrain). Please take a look at our calendar for other walks that are good for dogs to join!
