Every two years or so, our Bookshop honors a prominent FilAm author with the title AUTHOR OF THE YEAR for preserving and elevating the literary traditions and culture of our people. The first one we honored was Dr Paulino Lim, Professor Emeritus of CSU - Long Beach for his numerous literary works, followed by sociologist Dr Rhacel Salazar Parrenas (formerly of USC and now Doris Stevens Professor of Sociology and Gender and Sexuality Studies ar Princeton University) for her indepth research and books on Women and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). And in 2024 - 2025, we honored child psychologist Dr Joy Francisco of San Diego for her various books that give young FilAm children a chance to know the culture of their parents.
For the year 2026-2027. we have chosen a sister team, both scholars and authors. We present with pride Dr Leny Mendoza Strobel and Dr. S. Lily Mendoza as our AUTHORS OF THE YEAR. Leny is currently a settler on Pomo and Coast Miwok lands (Sonoma County, CA.) Her work has focused on the process of decolonization and reindigenization. She is Founding Elder at the Center for Babaylan Studies and is Professor Emeritus of American Multicultural Studies at Sonoma State University. She edited BABAYLAN: Filipinos and the Call of the Indigenous (2010) and together with her sister Lily, they co-edited BACK FROM THE CROCODILE'S BELLY : Philippine Babaylan Studies & The Struggle for Indigenous Memory (2013). Lily is a professor of culture and communication and is known for her path-breaking work on the politics of indigeneity and critique of the cultural logic of modernity. She is the author of "Between the Homeland and the Diaspora: The Politics of Theorizing Filipino and Filipino American Identities" which is now out of print. Her latest book is "Decolonizing Ecotheology: Indigenous and Subaltern Challenges." She is also the Executive Director of the non-profit Center for Babaylan Studies (CfBS), a movement for decolonization and indigenization among diasporic Filipinos in North America and beyond. More recently, she has been invited to the Women Bridging Worlds, a mentoring circle of high-influence women fellows leading social movements for transformation hosted by the Bioneers Collective Heritage Institute. Both sisters have been published widely in various cultural and native studies journals and anthologies on questions of identity and subjectivity, cultural politics in national, post- and trans- national contexts, discourses of indigenization, race, and ethnicity, and, more recently, civilization and climate change. Two sisters following the same path to help us find our way back into our ancient culture and traditions. This is an event not to be missed. Please reserve soonest because seats are limited. See less
