About The Peak District - publishing in the wake of the Peak District's seventy-fifth anniversary, this intriguing book offers a different kind of tour of the UK's oldest national park. The Peak District is one of Britain's most popular National Parks. But how well do we really know it? Caught between two of the country's largest cities, it is a place of stark beauty and starker contradictions, where caves, chasms and ruins exist improbably alongside the industrial behemoth of the Hope Cement Works. In The Peak District: An unguided tour, writer, walker and photographer Paul Dobraszczyk takes readers on an exhilarating journey through this familiar unfamiliar world. Paying close attention to the language that has been used to describe it - from moors and tors to paths and rivers, farms and mills - he asks what the landscape does to our minds and what we do to it in return. Blending travelogue, nature writing, history, geology and folklore, Dobraszczyk offers a new way of seeing the Peak District, reminding us of its strangeness and of the multitude of other things in the landscape besides ourselves.
About the author: Paul Dobraszczyk is a Manchester-based writer and photographer and a lecturer at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. He is the author of many books, including The Matter of Architecture (2026) and Architecture and Anarchism (2021).
