Aussie Rob’s new album, Radical Centrist, contains a harder edge than the band’s first album, expressing the angst and internal turmoil one must feel identifying and grappling with the complex and sophisticated ideas present within the radical centrist ideology. This burgeoning intensity is brought out through a certain punk rock musical aesthetic, and like most punk rockers, their music and worldview will inevitably develop into something disappointing and alienating. The harder edge they bring to the fore in their performance compliments a jazz harmonic sensibility in a surprising (not necessarily good) way.
A sprinkling of earnest humanity and gentle moments can be heard throughout the album, giving hope that there is still a glimmer of passion left in their dulled and hollow core.

Ashes is a dynamic band who have cultivated a distinct and analogous language over the past few years. This group brings to life sketches of music written by trumpeter and band leader Ashley Ballat, whose eclectic musical aesthetic amalgamates music from the incredible Australian Jazz scene, ECM records, American Free Jazz, Ambient, Folk and hint of Metal.
Together the band coalesce acoustic sounds with electronics to create thick soundscapes full of texture, colour, and mood. Moving between lamenting melodies, dense fiery fury and sparse, delicately restrained improvisation, this band’s energy is unique.
