SYNOPSIS
The Cher Show is a high-energy jukebox musical that tells the remarkable life story of Cher through her iconic music, dazzling fashion, and unforgettable career. The story follows Cher at three stages of her life—Babe, the young dreamer finding her voice; Lady, the rising star navigating fame, love, and independence; and Star, the legendary performer looking back on the triumphs and challenges that shaped her.
Featuring hits such as "Believe," "If I Could Turn Back Time," "Strong Enough," "I Got You Babe," and "The Beat Goes On," the musical celebrates Cher's relationships, career reinventions, struggles, and determination to keep moving forward. At its heart, The Cher Show is an uplifting story about resilience, self-discovery, and having the courage to become who you were always meant to be.
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
The Cher Show is BIG, bold, glamorous, and incredibly high-energy -- and we are looking for a cast ready to bring all of that energy to the stage!
We are seeking dynamic triple-threat performers who can SING, DANCE, and ACT and who are excited to take on the unique demands of this production. Whether you are portraying one of our principal characters or rocking the ensemble, every performer will be an important part of creating Cher's world.
This show MOVES! Cast members should expect to be actively involved throughout much of the production. In addition to performing on stage, performers may be singing from off stage, executing choreography, making quick costume and character changes, assisting with transitions, and preparing to jump right back into the action. There is very little opportunity to simply "sit backstage" and wait for the next scene.
Because of this, stamina is extremely important. We need performers who can maintain strong vocals, execute choreography, tell the story, and sustain the same level of energy and commitment at the end of the show that they brought to the opening number.
That may sound demanding—and it is—but it is also what makes The Cher Show such an exciting experience for its cast. This is a true ENSEMBLE production where everyone contributes to the music, movement, storytelling, and spectacle.
Casting will consider singing, acting, dance/movement ability, stamina, musicality, versatility, stage presence, commitment, and your willingness to work as part of a team. You do not need to walk into auditions already being perfect at everything. We want performers who are prepared to work hard, take direction, challenge themselves, and give everything they have to the production.
Most importantly, COME HAVE FUN! Bring your personality, your energy, and your individuality into the room. Take a risk. Make a bold choice. Support the people around you. And remember—we aren't looking for 25 people to stand behind Cher. We're looking for 25 storytellers to help us tell her story.
Come ready to SING. DANCE. ACT. WORK. And have an absolute blast doing it!
— Jimmy Ulrich, Director
The Cher Show
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Casting Requirements 20-25 Adults 21 and Over
BABE — Cher in her early years
Vocal Part: Alto/Mezzo-Soprano | Approx. G3–E5
Young, ambitious, funny, and full of dreams. Babe represents Cher before and during the beginning of her rise to fame. She is discovering her voice, identity, and place in the world while navigating her early relationship with Sonny. Requires a strong singer/actor with confidence, vulnerability, comedic instincts, and the ability to capture Cher's distinctive lower vocal quality.
LADY — Cher as a rising star
Vocal Part: Alto/Mezzo-Soprano | Approx. G3–E5
Bold, witty, glamorous, and increasingly independent. Lady represents Cher during the height of Sonny & Cher and the period when she begins taking control of her career and personal life. She balances humor and strength with moments of uncertainty and vulnerability. Requires a dynamic singer/actor with strong stage presence and a rich contemporary/pop-rock sound.
STAR — Cher as the icon
Vocal Part: Alto/Mezzo-Soprano | Approx. F3–E5
Confident, commanding, quick-witted, and resilient. Star is the Cher the world recognizes—the accomplished entertainer who has survived heartbreak, setbacks, and constant reinvention. She reflects on her life while encouraging her younger selves to keep moving forward. Requires exceptional stage presence, vocal strength, humor, emotional depth, and a powerful lower register.
SONNY BONO
Vocal Part: Baritone/Tenor | Approx. B2–E4
Charming, ambitious, controlling, funny, and complicated. Sonny becomes Cher's husband, musical partner, and an essential part of her early career. The role requires an actor who can capture Sonny's charisma while portraying the complexities of his relationship with Cher. Strong singing, acting, and comedic timing are important.
GEORGIA HOLT / LUCILLE BALL
Vocal Part: Mezzo-Soprano/Alto
Georgia is Cher's strong-willed, loving, and outspoken mother, who encourages her daughter to recognize her own worth. This performer also portrays legendary entertainer Lucille Ball, who offers Cher memorable advice about independence and survival in show business. Requires versatility, warmth, humor, strong character work, and confident singing.
BOB MACKIE / ROBERT ALTMAN / FRANK
Vocal Part: Baritone/Tenor
A featured track portraying several important men in Cher's life. Bob Mackie is the brilliant and theatrical costume designer responsible for many of Cher's unforgettable looks. Robert Altman is the influential film director who helps open a new chapter in Cher's acting career. Requires a versatile character actor capable of creating clearly distinct personalities. Strong singing and comedic character work are valuable.
GREGG ALLMAN / JOHN SARKISIAN
Vocal Part: Baritone/Tenor
Gregg Allman is the charismatic rock musician who becomes Cher's second husband in a passionate but turbulent relationship. John Sarkisian is Cher's father. This track calls for a strong actor with presence, versatility, confident vocals, and the ability to handle more dramatic moments within the story.
LEE / SIGMUND FREUD / PHIL SPECTOR
Vocal Part: Baritone/Tenor
A versatile featured character track portraying several figures who appear throughout Cher's journey. Each character should be distinct and memorable. Strong singing, comedic instincts, and excellent character acting are especially valuable.
ENSEMBLE
Vocal Parts: Soprano / Alto / Tenor / Bass
The ensemble is essential to bringing Cher's world to life, portraying dancers, singers, television personalities, musicians, fans, reporters, and numerous characters throughout the decades. Ensemble performers should be energetic storytellers with strong pop/rock vocals and movement abilities. Many ensemble members may cover or portray multiple featured roles throughout the production.
OFF-STAGE VOCAL ENSEMBLE — Soprano / Alto / Tenor / Bass
A dedicated group of strong vocalists who will provide live off-stage harmonies, backing vocals, and vocal support throughout The Cher Show. Singers should have excellent pitch, strong musicianship, the ability to hold independent harmony parts, and the vocal stamina to perform consistently throughout the production. This ensemble is an essential part of creating the powerful, full sound of Cher's iconic music.
THE THREE CHERS
Babe, Lady, and Star are not simply Cher at different ages—they frequently share the stage and interact with one another. Together, they represent different sides of the same woman, allowing the audience to experience Cher's memories, doubts, humor, strength, and evolution in a uniquely theatrical way.
All three performers should possess strong pop/rock voices, excellent musicianship, commanding stage presence, and the ability to capture Cher's recognizable vocal style without simply creating an impersonation.
