𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬
Twelfth Night is the funniest, most universal and accessible of Shakespeare’s plays. The play opens with the tragedy of lost siblings and thwarted love, but proceeds into chaos with mistaken identities and misunderstandings with hilarious dramatic results. It is a true ensemble piece with few monologues and requires a high degree of chemistry among the cast. Despite dark moments, the play champions the core message that, in a chaotic and uncertain world, there is love and joy in “present mirth” and “present laughter.”
Role Breakdown:
VIOLA and SEBASTIAN: loving twins separated by shipwreck at the beginning of the play, now resourcefully trying to make their way in the world. *These roles have been cast*
OLIVIA: clever, independent, self-assured and like Viola, Olivia begins the play in deep mourning for the death of her brother.
COUNT ORSINO: begins the play in intense but unrequited love for Olivia, brooding, self-oriented, but always not overly self-aware.
SIR TOBY BELCH: Olivia’s kinsman, often drunk, fun-loving, irresponsible, careless and an all-time party-animal.
SIR ANDREW AUGUECHEEK: a friend of Sir Toby and one of the suitors of Sir Toby’s relative, the beautiful and wealthy Olivia. Sir Andrew is self-absorbed, easily led and a bit dim-witted.
MALVOLIO: Olivia’s steward, pompous, uptight, reserved, stuck-up, keen to rise, disapproving.
FESTE: The Fool is wise, clever, witty, caring and loyal. Those auditioning for Feste should bring in a short song they feel comfortable singing as part of their audition.
MARIA: Olivia’s gentlewoman: clever, worldly, highly loyal to Olivia and Sir Toby.
ANTONIO: Sebastian’s companion, a pirate with a shady past, but devoted to Sebastian
OTHER CHARACTERS: These characters do not have a direct audition but you might be asked to read for them. We’ll also be looking for these in other auditions so please let us know if you are comfortable being cast in a role other than the one you are auditioning for.

Notes for Auditionees:

Cast members will be required to be available for all rehearsals. Wherever possible, pre-existing commitments are accommodated, so auditionees are asked to list all such dates/times on their audition form.
