Kas notiek ar mākslu krīzes laikā? Kā mainās mākslinieka loma un atbildība? Kā šādos apstākļos mainās mākslas institūciju loma? Kāda ir kolekcionāru un mecenātu atbildība, un kādu lomu mākslas kolekcija var pildīt plašākā kultūras ekosistēmā?
Publiskā saruna “Athens in Focus: Today and Looking Back / The Role of the Artist and the Collector in Times of Crisis” pulcēs četras personības, kuras Atēnu mākslas vidi pieredzējušas un līdzveidojušas no ļoti atšķirīgām, taču vienlaikus simbiotiskām pozīcijām.
Marina Fokidis, izstādes Always the Sun kuratore, ir kuratore, autore un institūciju veidotāja, kuras darbība cieši saistīta ar Atēnu laikmetīgās mākslas vides transformāciju. Grieķijas ekonomiskās krīzes laikā viņa nodibināja Kunsthalle Athena un vēlāk South as a State of Mind, kā arī bija daļa no documenta 14 komandas. Kunsthalle Athena gadījumā krīze kļuva ne tikai par apdraudējumu, bet arī par iespēju no jauna domāt par to, kā mākslas institūcija var pastāvēt un darboties.
Irene Y. Panagopoulos ir kolekcionāre, mākslas mecenāte un Magna Marine Inc. prezidente, kura aktīvi darbojas arī starptautisku mākslas institūciju vidē - viņa ir Dia Art Foundation un Grieķijas Nacionālās galerijas padomju locekle un Tate International Council dalībniece. Bill Balaskas ir mākslinieks, teorētiķis un pedagogs, kurš sākotnēji studējis ekonomiku Grieķijā un vēlāk mākslu Lielbritānijā. Šī starpdisciplinārā pieredze veidojusi arī viņa māksliniecisko praksi, kurā viņš pievēršas sociālekonomiskajām un politiskajām sistēmām, mūsdienu utopijām un distopijām, kā arī mākslas lomai sabiedrībā.
Kostis Velonis ir Atēnās dzīvojošs mākslinieks un Atēnu Mākslas akadēmijas asociētais profesors. Viņa tēlniecībā savijas arhitektūra, politika, mitoloģija un ikdienas dzīves naratīvi, īpašu uzmanību pievēršot spriegumam starp iecerēto un realitāti - starp utopiskām idejām un to neizbēgamo sastapšanos ar neveiksmi, nepilnību un cilvēcisko pieredzi.

What does it mean to live in intense light – beneath a sun that not only warms and illuminates, but also lays bare and at times dazzles? How has the Greek sun shaped not only the rhythm of life, but also the way artists see the world and respond to it?
Athens is a city where this light is almost physically present. Yet it has also been shaped by many layers of history, by political and economic upheavals, and by an ability to change again and again and to find new ways of existing. Along with the city, its contemporary art scene has also changed profoundly in recent decades, giving Athens an increasingly significant place on the international art map.
What happens to art in times of crisis? How do the role and responsibility of the artist change? How does the role of art institutions change in such circumstances? What is the responsibility of collectors and patrons, and what role can an art collection play within the wider cultural ecosystem?
The public talk “Athens in Focus: Today and Looking Back / The Role of the Artist and the Collector in Times of Crisis” brings together four figures who have experienced and helped shape the Athenian art scene from very different, yet at the same time symbiotic, positions.
Marina Fokidis, curator of the exhibition Always the Sun, is a curator, writer and institution-builder whose work is closely bound up with the transformation of the contemporary art scene in Athens. During the Greek economic crisis she founded Kunsthalle Athena and later South as a State of Mind, and she was part of the documenta 14 team. In the case of Kunsthalle Athena, the crisis became not only a threat but also an opportunity to rethink how an art institution can exist and operate.
Irene Y. Panagopoulos is a collector, art patron and president of Magna Marine Inc., who is also active in the world of international art institutions – she sits on the boards of the Dia Art Foundation and the National Gallery of Greece and is a member of the Tate International Council. For her, art is a way of understanding the world and our place in it. Her collection has grown as a living dialogue between generations, geographies and ideas. Panagopoulos sees the collector not only as the owner of artworks, but also as their temporary custodian and as a participant in the cultural ecosystem, whose role is to support artists and the environment in which art can come into being.
Bill Balaskas is an artist, theorist and educator who first studied economics in Greece and later art in the United Kingdom. This interdisciplinary background has also shaped his artistic practice, in which he addresses socio-economic and political systems, contemporary utopias and dystopias, and the role of art in society.
Kostis Velonis is an Athens-based artist and associate professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts. His sculpture interweaves architecture, politics, mythology and narratives of everyday life, paying particular attention to the tension between intention and reality – between utopian ideas and their inevitable encounter with failure, imperfection and human experience.
Four distinct yet interconnected perspectives on a city and an art scene shaped both by intense sunlight and by crisis and change. A conversation about Athens today – and about art's capacity, even in the most uncertain times, to create a space in which to meet, think and imagine other ways of being together.
