Taking as a starting point the registry of monstrous races in the European depiction of "the New World", the Atlas of the American Monster examines the concept of "Indigenous monstrosity", unveiling, through prints, texts, and videos, its reincarnation in the figure of the “native terrorists”.This exhibition, a first iteration of an expansive transmedia project, brings together a collection of monoprints, woodcuts, and etchings by artists Bastardilla (Colombia), Thiago Modesto (Brazil), Gloria Quispe (Peru), and Rodrigo García Cordero (Venezuela), in dialogue with literary chronicles from writers/activists Laura Devia López (Colombia), Dina Ananco (Peru), Edson Kayapó (Brazil), and José Luis Cáceres (Chile), to shine a light on four territorial conflicts in South America.
The Atlas of the American Monster is curated by Carlos Zerpa Bravo, with the collaboration of Adriana Dominguez Velasco. This exhibition would not have been possible without generous support from Nordisk Kulturfond, Kone Foundation, and Pro Helvetia. Special thanks to artist Siiri Viljakka.
