Asia Cine-Club: Still Walking 歩いても 歩いても (2008, Japan)🗓 Tuesday, October 27 | ⏰ Doors: 6PM | 🎬 Film: 8PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
We close the month with one day, one family, and everything left unsaid between them. The Yokoyamas gather at their parents' house to mark the anniversary of the eldest son's death - an occasion that surfaces old resentments, quiet disappointments, and the particular ache of a family that loves each other without quite knowing how to say so. Hirokazu Kore-eda made the film in the years after losing both of his own parents, and it shows in how specific and unforced every gesture feels.
Nothing about Still Walking is dramatic in the conventional sense - no confrontation resolves cleanly, no wound gets stitched shut - and that restraint is exactly what's made it one of the most acclaimed films in Kore-eda's catalogue, regularly compared to Ozu's Tokyo Story for how much weight it carries while raising its voice for almost no one.
"If anyone can be considered an heir of the great Yasujiro Ozu, it might be Hirokazu Kore-Eda."
- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"Has a deceptively simple touch with the quiet, stirring film."
- Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
