Human-Environment Interactions: Using Palaeoenvironmental Techniques to Recover Natural Archives from Ice, Sediment, and Organics to Better Understand Human Experiences in Ancient LandscapesDuring the past 12000 years, people have and continue to engage with a diverse and challenging landscape, including changes in climate and seasons, resource availability, and forest dynamics. Along with mineral resources, people interact with their natural landscape by utilizing plants and animals for sustenance, shelter, teachings and cultural practices, to name a few. Palaeoenvironmental records can be combined with archaeological data, to better understand how people interact with the physical landscape around them. We can use small segments of plant and animal material, such as seeds, recovered from lake sediment cores, glacial ice samples, and organics, to reconstruct these ancient landscapes. This talk will highlight some of the collections at the Royal Alberta Museum used as proxies to measure past environmental conditions, as well as discuss some recent projects in the QE lab.
