What is Artmaking for YOU?Artmaking for YOU is a community-engaged artmaking program designed to foster connection, wellbeing and creative empowerment. The initiative responds directly to Craft and Design Canberra’s Design Festival’s theme of “Dissent” by challenging the alienation, isolation and social barriers that inhibit expression and belonging. Instead of positioning art purely as an aesthetic product, the program reframes creativity as a collective act of resistance—a means of reclaiming voice, identity and agency.
Participants gather in a safe, supportive, confidential art studio (and/or online) to explore personal and communal narratives through hands-on artmaking. Through guided workshops facilitated by a qualified artist and art therapist, the program uses inclusive creative processes to question norms, challenge marginalisation, and build solidarity through shared creative expression.
This initiative asserts that healing, collaboration and community connection are powerful forms of dissent—particularly in a world dominated by disconnection, productivity pressures and individualism. By foregrounding emotional wellbeing, inclusivity and collective imagination, the program aligns with the festival’s conceptual intention to provoke alternative ways of being and making.
Workshops offer YOU:
• Guided exploration of materials
• Space for personal expression
• Group conversation and connection
• Supportive facilitation by a trained art therapist
• Optional sharing of artworks in a private forum
If YOU are:
• An adult seeking creative engagement, community connection, or a supported space for expression, or
• An individual with limited access to art opportunities due to mobility, geographic, social or economic barriers, or
• A person seeking therapeutic benefit, emotional wellbeing, or creative exploration,
these workshops are for YOU.
Group size:
Face-to-face and online: up to 10 participants per workshop
