Kirks’ Grocery is proud to partner with Art House Cinema and Pub to present assemblage/collage shadow boxes by Kate Huston.
Kate Huston’s introduction to the art world began at an early age through countless hours spent in the diorama rooms of the Boston Public Library, reenacting scenes from history, and exploring the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. There, she discovered the work of Marcel Duchamp and the assemblage and collage creations of Joseph Cornell, artists whose innovative use of found objects and layered imagery sparked her fascination with transformation, storytelling, and symbolic meaning.
Drawn to the spiritual qualities of nature, Greek mythology, classic fairy tales, and the mysterious fantasy worlds imagined during the Victorian era, she began exploring these themes through collage boxes and assemblages while attending the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1995. Over the years, and through several moves, she has built a collection of Victorian postcards, animal etchings, scientific illustrations, and imagery from antique journals.
Using these materials, she creates imagined worlds where humans, animals, and nature coexist on an astral plane. Through layering, juxtaposition, and narrative construction, she blends the familiar with the fantastical, creating visual stories that invite viewers to explore spaces that exist between memory, myth, and imagination.
Her Tiny Box World Series is a place where imagination, spirituality, and nature converge. These miniature environments offer moments of wonder, contemplation, and escape, providing a respite from everyday life while encouraging a deeper connection to the mysteries of both the natural world and the unseen realms beyond it.
