Ambreen Butt was trained in traditional Indian and Persian miniature painting in Lahore, Pakistan, Ambreen Butt retools these techniques to bear witness to political violence. Her large-scale collage, Soul of My Soul, grieves the loss of a child and features a Madonna-like figure surrounded by collaged texts that quote George Floyd (“I can’t breathe”) and a Palestinian grandfather mourning the loss of his granddaughter (“Soul of my soul”).
Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Ambreen Butt received her BFA in traditional Indian and Persian miniature painting from the National College of Arts in Lahore and her MFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is included in collections such as the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Elyse Pignolet disrupts the decorative beauty of the majolica ceramic tradition with feminist texts that call out sexism and gender violence. Lurking beneath the finely painted designs and pretty sheen are the ugly facts of daily microaggressions and denials of women’s rights. The blue-and-white ceramics found throughout Europe—known as Delftware in Holland and majolica in Italy, Spain, and Portugal—grew out of a desire to emulate Chinese porcelain.
Born in Oakland, California, Elyse Pignolet is an American artist of Filipino heritage based in Los Angeles. She received her BFA in ceramics from California State University, Long Beach in 2007. Working primarily in ceramics, her practice explores political and social issues, feminism, misogyny, inequality, and cultural stereotypes.
This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Truths Be Told: Artists Activate Traditions, and made possible through the generous support of the International Folk Art Foundation, Friends of Folk Art, and donors to the Museum of New Mexico Foundation Education Fund, including lead support from Courtney and Scott Taylor and TOKo Santa Fe.
