The Grand Rapids Film Society is proud to present Artist Showcase Series: Ellery Bryan. Join us for an evening with Ellery as they present a program of their short films in a showcase format with commentary for each work followed by a discussion and Q&A.Ellery Bryan (they/them) is a nonbinary visual artist and educator translating physical to ephemeral media. Their artwork traces non-linear themes of loss and ritualized gestures of connection through analog films, performances, sonic and sculptural installations. Ellery’s embodied interactions with autobiographical symbols, reflexive acknowledgment of the film medium and durational relationships between body and place build a sensory language for significance and felt-experience. They are an Assistant Professor of Film and Video Production at Grand Valley State University.

There Is Ringing Inside, It Is Evening (2023) 3:50
There Is Ringing Inside, It Is Evening is a short film comprised of several solo and collaborative performances which were initially projected, looped and accompanied by the live score of an audio installation in a solo exhibition of the same name in Anchorage, AK. It addresses the loss of my partner and attempts to connect with his absent figure through interactions with vacancies in the frame and the signals of ritual bells - in reference to Bell, his middle name.
that I have broken into two (2022) 2:40
that I have broken into two is a hand-processed 16mm silent film created two months after the death of my former partner. A double-exposed performance takes place through improvised interactions on opposite sides of the frame, separated by a half-processing method which renders one side of the film strip as a negative, and the other as a positive. This film attempts to reckon with an unreachable other side.
My Body Is a Lens I Can Look Through With My Mind (2025) 16:30
My Body Is a Lens I Can Look Through With My Mind is an experimental essay film that begins at the 2024 solar eclipse, and uses planetary movements and geological records as jumping-off points to explore memory, meaning-making and subjectivity. It moves back and forth between cultural and hyper-personal mythology, creating a taxonomy of symbols that resist stable interpretation and insist on the significance of felt-perspective.
Idumea 10:30
Idumea is a poem-film based on entries in an encyclopedia of rocks and minerals. It references the historic geography of Idumea, the biblical term for the region of present-day Palestine and a shape-note hymn of the same name. It weaves a chorus of rage and grief for witnessing genocide.
I Saw You (work in progress) estimated 6:00-10:00
I Saw You is an in-progress essay film that intertwines a defunct DIY missed connections column of the same name with historic myths of disappearance and a year-long period of faulty sightings of my partner following his death. It follows tender depictions of loved ones who slip away at the moment of perception.
