A free collaborative workshop led by participating artists and curator of The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing, exploring personal and community heritage through collage, found imagery and natural forms.
The workshop will draw on the practices of Sid White Jones, whose work incorporates collage, discarded and collected images, slides and photographs, and Maisy Aykroyd, whose print practice incorporates the philosophy and practice of Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging.
The session will begin with an introduction to the exhibition, the artists’ practices and their work in the exhibition, followed by an informal conversation and Q&A.
Participants will then explore processes of collecting, cutting, editing and reworking imagery, considering how information and memories are transmitted, discarded, repurposed and remembered. This will lead into an exploration of arrangement and composition, drawing on the philosphy of Ikebana focusing on line, space, balance and our relationship with nature.
Working collaboratively, participants will contribute to a large-scale joint collage.
