Art Scenes Are Built Through Networks
Philippe Van Cauteren & Iosif Király
Moderated by Diana Marincu
📅 18 October 2026
🕓 16:00
📍 București, Palatul Universul, Mezanin
Romanian Art Week 2026, in collaboration with Art Encounters, brings together Philippe Van Cauteren and Iosif Király for a conversation about the networks, relationships and infrastructures that allow an art scene to become visible beyond its local context.
How does a local art scene become part of a wider international conversation? What makes connections between artists, curators, institutions, galleries, collectors and cultural organisations meaningful and sustainable? And how can moments of international visibility develop into lasting relationships, collaborations and forms of cultural exchange?
The conversation will also look at the Romanian art scene within the broader Central and Eastern European context, considering the role that exhibitions, biennials, art events and cultural institutions can play in building networks that continue to exist beyond individual projects.
The discussion will open a perspective towards Art Encounters 2027, exploring the possibilities for new encounters and dialogues between the Romanian and international art scenes.
Philippe Van Cauteren is Artistic Director of S.M.A.K. in Ghent and curator of the 2027 Art Encounters Biennial.
Iosif Király is an artist and professor whose practice moves across photography, architecture, memory and the construction of images.
Diana Marincu, Artistic Director of Art Encounters and curator, will moderate the conversation.
A conversation about visibility, connection, international exchange and the networks through which art scenes grow and travel.
