One of the things we want Art Meets Jazz to become is a place where you can discover musicians you may not have had the opportunity to hear before.
For our October edition, we're welcoming the Marye Lobb & Ryan Johnson Duo to Buffalo.
Marye is a bilingual vocalist and songwriter whose music moves comfortably between jazz, bossa nova, Latin influences, and her own original songs. A Berklee graduate, her musical journey has taken her from New York City clubs to performances across the United States, South America, and Europe. Her most recent album, Mi Ola, brings together songs in English and Spanish with jazz, Latin, folk, and acoustic influences.
Ryan brings another musical dimension to the duo. A guitarist, composer, producer, and educator, he has released more than eight albums of original music spanning fusion jazz, funk, and neo-soul. He's performed alongside or opened for artists including Sharon Jones, Tower of Power, Jennifer Holliday, and Charlie Hunter. This past summer, the Rochester International Jazz Festival selected Ryan to lead its nightly late-night jam sessions throughout the nine-day festival.
Together, Marye and Ryan bring those different musical backgrounds into something much more intimate: voice and guitar, jazz standards and bossa nova, familiar songs and original music.
And that's what makes them such an interesting fit for Art Meets Jazz.
This isn't a concert where you need to know the artists before you walk through the door. Come have something to eat from Beebe's. Enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine. Spend some time with the art at the Hunt Art Gallery, Beebe's, and the Brisbane Building Lobby. Then settle in just a few feet from the musicians and discover where the evening takes you.
You may already know Marye and Ryan from Rochester.
We're guessing many in Buffalo don't.
