Beginning with the groundbreaking work of Jann Haworth, this lecture explores how artists have transformed textiles and traditionally feminized forms of labor into powerful tools of artistic expression, storytelling, and resistance. Long associated with domestic life and dismissed as craft rather than fine art, textile practices have become a means of challenging artistic hierarchies, asserting identity, and reclaiming overlooked histories. Situating Haworth's practice within a broader history of fiber arts, the lecture considers how artists across generations have used fabric, thread, and the act of making to challenge conventional ideas about art, gender, and cultural memory.Reception to follow. This will also be a Sit and Stitch so feel free to bring your fiber supplies!
