Cempohualxochitl / Aztec Marigold Dye Bath
About this Event

Join us for a free two-hour session on cempohualxochitl, or Aztec marigold, and how its petals yield natural pigment. As Día de Muertos celebrations wind down, we’ll think critically about waste. We’ll ask what can be done with this festivity’s remnants.

You’ll work with cempasúchil in dried, powdered, and fresh forms. Together, we’ll turn it into color medicine for the coming fall and winter. Then you’ll use resist techniques to create tie-dye patterns on bandanas! You’re welcome to bring your own scoured and mordanted pieces too.

This event is part of Art in the Garden and Art and AgriCulture. Critically and creatively engage with a diversity of artmaking techniques that open you up to deeper dialogue on place and your lived environments. Explore your relationship to food and agriculture, and the histories, stories, and traditions that shape the ways we grow, prepare, and share food.

FACILITATOR

Jasmín Durán (she/they) is a clinical herbalist, community educator, urban grower and care practitioner based in unceded Lenapehoking territory (NYC). Communing closely with plants, urban gardens, storytelling and immigrant communities, their work is focused in the remembrance of ancestral healing practices, technologies and traditions in the immigrant diaspora. Today you can find her facilitating herbal workshops, vending and sharing in community under her herbal project, meztli medicinals.

ACCESSIBILITY

  • The kitchen/classroom is wheelchair accessible; with advance notice we can add a mat path across the greenhouse’s pebbled ground (garden entrance has a small raised threshold; garden paths are grass).
  • Tables adjust height; backless benches/stools available.
  • Kitchen is shared—we avoid peanuts but can’t guarantee a nut-free space; water provided in refillable pitchers.
  • First aid on-site; nearest AED is one building away.
  • Nearest restrooms are ~1 min walk; a gender-neutral restroom is available by key from staff.
  • Not a scent-free space (essential oils used in class), though we ventilate and welcome masking/distancing.
  • Other access needs? Contact [email protected].
