š Venue Description: St Paulās Church, affectionately known as The Actorsā Church, is a unique and atmospheric venue nestled at the heart of Covent Garden. While it remains a working place of worship, it has developed a cherished reputation within Londonās theatre community as a space for both performance and reflection. Its intimate setting, peaceful garden, and historic architecture make it an exceptional venue for concerts, plays, recitals, and festivals throughout the year.
### **The History of St Paulās Church**
Commissioned by the 4th Earl of Bedford and designed by renowned architect Inigo Jones, St Paulās Church was completed in 1633. It was one of the first new churches built in London after the Reformation and is widely considered the first example of classical architecture applied to a London church.
The church gained its moniker, The Actorsā Church, due to its long-standing association with the theatrical community. It lies just steps from the heart of Theatreland and has become a spiritual and commemorative home for performers, writers, and stage crew alike. Memorials to Sir Charlie Chaplin, NoĆ«l Coward, Dame Diana Rigg, and Vivien Leigh can be found within the church and its gardens, alongside numerous other figures from the world of stage and screen.
Though damaged in the Blitz during WWII, St Paulās was faithfully restored and remains an active parish church and vibrant arts venue. It has played host to productions by Iris Theatre and other acclaimed companies, often making full use of its architecture and gardens for immersive and site-specific performances.
