Local government decisions have a direct impact on the conditions in which businesses operate, invest, hire and grow:
From housing and development approvals to infrastructure, transportation, taxation, farming, public safety and the overall economic health of our communities, the decisions made by local elected officials matter to businesses across the Comox Valley.
As a non-partisan business organization, the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce hosts All-Candidates Forums to provide businesses and community members with an opportunity to hear directly from candidates, better understand their priorities, and make informed decisions at the ballot box.
The Chamber does not endorse or oppose candidates or political parties. Our role is to create a fair, respectful and non-partisan forum where all candidates are given an equal opportunity to participate and where the issues important to our local business community can be explored.
A Business-Focused Conversation:
This forum will have a particular focus on issues affecting business, economic development and the future prosperity of our community.
Questions will explore topics such as the local business climate, housing and workforce challenges, taxation and affordability, farming & agriculture, permitting and development, infrastructure and transportation, public safety, economic development and other priorities identified by the Chamber and local business community.
Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions during the event:
Questions will be moderated to ensure they are relevant to the purpose of the event, respectful and appropriate. The moderator may combine similar questions, determine which questions are asked, redirect discussion, and ensure candidates have a fair opportunity to respond.
By registering, all attendees agree to the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce All-Candidates Forum Code of Conduct:
- I will treat candidates, attendees, Chamber staff, volunteers and event partners with respect.
- I will allow candidates to speak without interruption. Heckling, shouting, persistent interruptions or other behaviour that disrupts the forum will not be permitted.
- I will respect the Chamber's non-partisan role. Attendees are welcome to hold and express their own political views, but organized campaigning, demonstrations or activities that interfere with the purpose or operation of the forum are not permitted inside the event.
- I will follow the moderator's direction and the established event format. The moderator is responsible for maintaining order, enforcing time limits and ensuring candidates receive a fair opportunity to participate.
- I understand that submitting a question does not guarantee it will be asked. Questions may be selected, combined, edited for clarity or omitted by the moderator. Questions must relate to matters within the scope of local government and/or issues relevant to business and the local economy.
- I will not submit or make comments or questions that are discriminatory, threatening, defamatory, derogatory, personally abusive or intended primarily to attack an individual's character or integrity.
- I will not bring signs, banners or other materials intended to disrupt the forum. Campaign materials may only be displayed or distributed in areas specifically designated by the Chamber, if applicable.
- I will comply with reasonable instructions from Chamber staff, the moderator, venue personnel and event security.
- I understand that disruptive or inappropriate behaviour may result in my removal from the event. The Chamber reserves the right to take reasonable action necessary to protect participants and allow the forum to continue safely and respectfully.
