ARE YOU EVEN INDIAN? is an intimate dance-theatre work about love, migration and the quiet negotiations of identity within a relationship.Set inside a surreal courtroom where a marriage is put on trial, the piece follows a British-born South Asian woman and an Indian-born man as their love story unfolds. The show slowly exposes deeper questions neither of them can avoid: Who gets to claim culture? What does “home” mean when memory and reality don’t match? And who decides what makes someone truly Indian?
The show shifts between naturalistic scenes, physical storytelling and Dance.
Revealing the emotional distance growing between two people trying to build a life across cultures.
Written by Mohit Mathur and Directed by Leigh Toney, the work draws from lived diaspora experience and explores identity not as politics, but as something negotiated daily within love, family and belonging.
Following its award-winning presentation at Riverside Studios’ Bitesize Festival 2025, the work is currently being further developed through an Arts Council England supported R&D, expanding its movement language and theatrical form towards a UK tour in Autumn.
