Archery Meditation Experience
Mark Van Sessen archery educator
The Meditative Practice of Archery
Archery is an ancient practice that has been utilized all over the world
throughout history. Whether studying Ancient Greece, Medieval Europe, or Early America, archery played a significant role In survival both in terms of hunting and warfare.
Today, archery is enjoyed worldwide as both a competitive sport, a
recreational activity, and a meditative practice. How is Archery Meditative? The practice of archery is a journey into moving meditation. This form of moving meditation invites an intense mind-body connection, where your body’s movements and your mind’s focus work in harmony. Archers engage in centering techniques, focusing on their breathing and cultivating inner stillness. Striving for the perfect shot, their mind enters a state of flow, where external distractions cease to exist. Each shot becomes a lesson in focus, stillness, and self-perfection.
