WHAT IS THE EMBODY FESTIVAL PLAY LAB?
The emBODY Festival Play Lab is a curated short play festival featuring ten original works performed on June 26 at 95 Washington Street, Canton, MA. This is not a competition. There are no winners or losers, only ten plays selected for their artistic merit and alignment with emBODY's values, each given everything it needs to be fully realized in performance.
The emBODY Festival is the culminating event of the company's season, a celebration of new work, new voices, and the specific kind of storytelling that happens when a community of artists is given real production support and a real audience. We do not produce readings. We produce plays.
WHAT YOU GET
When your play is selected, emBODY handles the production. You write the play. We do the rest.
An assigned director from the emBODY community.
A full rehearsal process from May 1 through June 19, with a dedicated rehearsal space.
A complete tech process including lighting, projection, and sound, June 21 through 25.
A fully hosted acting call. emBODY helps cast your play.
A fully produced performance on June 26.
Please note that there is no financial compensation for selected playwrights at this time. What we offer is full production support and a genuine commitment to your work.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Ten short plays from local playwrights whose work aligns with emBODY's values: consent-forward storytelling, justice-conscious collaboration, and a genuine commitment to authentic human experience on stage. There is no required theme or genre. We welcome work from all voices and all forms.
We are specifically interested in work that centers authentic human experience and treats its characters with care and complexity, reflects a justice-conscious artistic stance not as a checklist but as a genuine orientation toward the world, takes the body seriously as a site of meaning, identity, and storytelling, and challenges assumptions, disrupts expectations, and earns its ending.
Work that exploits, demeans, or reproduces harm without critical intention is not a fit for this festival. If you are unsure whether your work aligns with our values, read our Equity, Access, and Anti-Oppression Statement at embodyprojecttheatre.com before submitting.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Eligible plays must meet all of the following criteria.
Up to 15 minutes in performance length.
A complete, standalone piece, or an excerpt from a longer work that can stand on its own.
No more than 6 actors required. If there are more roles than actors, doubling must be feasible.
Written by a playwright currently based in Greater Boston.
Formatted in standard industry script format: standard font, proper page layout, scene headings, and page numbering.
Stage directions are used purposefully and kept to what is essential.
Scripts that do not meet these criteria will not be considered. Please read carefully before submitting.
A NOTE ON VALUES ALIGNMENT
emBODY Project Theatre is a consent-forward, justice-conscious company. We hold that commitment in everything we produce, including work by other artists on our stage. Submitted plays do not need to engage with emBODY's research themes or reference embodied practice. They do need to reflect a genuine commitment to treating human stories, bodies, and experiences with care.
We welcome work that is dark, difficult, challenging, and complex. We ask that difficulty be purposeful and that the playwright has considered the impact of their storytelling choices on the characters, the performers, and the audience. Consent-forward practice does not mean conflict-free storytelling. It means knowing why you are doing what you are doing.
