About this Event
Early Recordings of Bird Imitators and Artistic Whistlers
Long before radio and record charts, whistling was America's original hit music — and mimicking birdsong may be humanity's oldest form of music-making. Join phonograph historian and collector "DJ MAC" (Michael Cumella) for a rare listening session featuring original 78rpm discs and wax cylinders, spun live on restored crank-up phonographs.
Discover the forgotten stars of Vaudeville and early recorded sound: whistlers and bird imitators who packed theaters and topped the charts over a century ago. MAC shares their surprising, often hilarious stories alongside the actual sounds that made them famous — a genre of entertainment nearly lost to time.
Equal parts concert, history lesson, and time machine. Come hear what the whole country was whistling about 100+ years ago.
