Join the Women's Justice Institute to see a powerful exhibit: Worthy: a Photographic Investigation of the U.S. “Justice” System with Criminalized Survivors of Gender Violence, by Melissa Grace Kreider. We will have a panel of criminalized survivors featured in the photos discussing their journeys and hear from attorneys and other advocates about Illinois laws and legal pathways toward freedom.
Entrapped into using lethal force, criminalized survivors across the country are punished for escaping their abusers with their lives and their children’s. The same legal system that fails to protect survivors from domestic violence mobilizes vast resources to incarcerate them, handing down decades-long sentences instead of pathways to healing, therapy, and rehabilitation. For many trapped in extreme violence, the system leaves only a horrific choice: K*ll or be killed.
Worthy critically examines the legal outcomes that spur a society where gender-based violence goes unchecked. The series confronts a reality in which survivors are barred from expressing anger or self-defense and expected instead to quietly accept abuse. It poses a vital question: Who is deemed worthy of belief and justice when the “perfect victim” is an impossible fantasy?
