"Women and the Blues: Beareather Reddy Sings the Classics"

Accompanied by pianist Richard Harper and guitarist Ayodele Maakheru, classic blueswoman Beareather Reddy takes you on a journey back to the 1920s and 1930s—an era when pioneering Black female singers celebrated womanhood and sang their truths about life's struggles, poverty, love, and freedom to love. This vital period in American history marked the introduction of African Americans to the recording industry and defined the era of the "Classic Blues Women." Beareather talks about and sings the icons Mamie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Bessie Smith who paved the way.
