A story for anyone who has ever loved - and hesitated.

Alter Ego Theatre, a Calgary-based theatre company bringing together artists from Ukraine and Canada, produced a psychological drama by Ivan Franko, written in 1905 and reimagined through the lens of contemporary sensibility.

At the heart of the story are Maria and Khoma (Massino). Maria is emotionally rich, vibrant, impulsive, and drawn to intense experiences and vivid personalities. Romantic by nature, she seeks to understand the world - and gradually comes into contact with its harsher realities. Khoma, by contrast, is restrained and rational, oriented toward order, predictability, and self-control. He avoids emotional excess and strives for stability and balance. They are drawn to one another, yet their different understandings of love, freedom, and responsibility turn this connection into a test - where every choice carries a cost.

In this stage interpretation, Maria perceives the jay as an alternative reflection of herself, an impulse that leads her toward choice.

Марія - емоційно багата, життєрадісна, імпульсивна й примхлива; її приваблюють яскраві особистості та сильні переживання. Романтична за своєю суттю, вона прагне пізнати світ - і поступово стикається з його жорсткою реальністю. Масіно ж - стриманий і раціональний, схильний до порядку, передбачуваності та внутрішньої дисципліни; він уникає надмірних емоцій і шукає спокою та контролю над власним життям. Їх тягне одне до одного, але різне розуміння любові, свободи й відповідальності робить цей зв’язок випробуванням, де кожен вибір має свою ціну.

У сценічній інтерпретації Марія сприймає образ сойки як альтернативне відображення себе - імпульс, що підштовхує до вибору.
