About this Event

The McIvers Grant Public Library will be hosting a quarterly lecture series to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As part of this year-long celebration, a group of civic-minded citizens and community partners have partnered to offer four sessions discussing the American Revolution, presented by Dr Matthew Stafford.

Info: "The Road to War, 1763-1775." This presentation will look at the deteriorating relationship
between England and her American colonies beginning in the immediate aftermath of the
French-Indian War and culminating with actions at Lexington and Concord.

May 14, 2026

Info: The War in the North, 1775-1777. This would address the initial force distributions on both
sides, the formalization of American military forces, British operations in New England, and the
American reactions to those operations.

August 13, 2026

Info: The Middle-States War, 1777. This would focus on the British decision to concentrate their
efforts immediately south of New England. It would address those efforts, the American
response, and the growing alliance between the Americans, Spain, and France.

November 12, 2026

Info: War in the South and Victory, 1778-1783. Thwarted in the North, the British turned their focus to the southern colonies, where they believed loyalty to the crown remained strong. Despite early successes, the British were ultimately bested by very clever generalship and the combined might of the American and French forces. Military action culminated at Yorktown (1771), though the war wasn't formally concluded until the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783.
