Perth's very own THE ETON RIFLES - TRIBUTE TO THE JAM celebrate the 45TH ANNIVERSARY of The Jam's 1980 all time classic "SOUND AFFECTS" at LYRIC'S UNDERGROUND in MAYLANDS on SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER, performing the album in full including "That's Entertainment", "Start!", "Man At The Cornershop" and "Boy About Town", plus a selection of The Jam fan faves! Sound Affects is Paul Weller’s favourite Jam album. This could be because it sounds “fresh” as he says, or it could be because it’s a self-contained piece of Weller himself – at least the bits he would respect and revisit. You have trademark deft social commentary (‘Man In The Corner Shop’, ‘That’s Entertainment’), battles with doubt (Monday’), laments of communication breakdown (‘Start!’) and spitting political rage (‘Set The House Ablaze’, ‘Scrape Away’). He works in his literary flair with a Shelley quote in the liner notes, the cover is a pop art collection of pictures that can each be related to an album track (not far from the artwork on 1995’s Stanley Road), and there is a smattering of 60s Beatles/Kinks/Small Faces influence about the whole thing. Ultimately Sound Affects shows a band that was being pushed by its leader slightly beyond their level of ability. Buckler and Foxton's propulsive acumen was already falling behind Weller’s ambitions. After the full-on soul revival of The Gift he was to abandon the three-piece for pastures new. But on this album you get to hear the Jam at their absolute peak. (Chris Jones, 2008, bbc.co.uk)
