Speaker Bios:

Dr. Leith Davis, Simon Fraser University: is a Professor in Simon Fraser University's Department of English and Director of the Research Centre for Scottish Studies. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Historical Society as well as a recipient of Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Medal for Academic Excellence (2010), the Cormack Teaching Award (2018) and the Amundsen Teaching Fellowship (2021).

Dr. Kevin James, University of Guelph: specializes in the social and cultural history of Ireland and Britain during the long nineteenth century, with a particular focus on Scotland and Ireland, tourism, travel, and the development of the modern hospitality industry. Their current work examines the history of inns and hotels across Britain and Ireland using historical hotel records, building on earlier research into nineteenth-century tourism in Ireland and the ways gender, race, and class shaped travel experiences.

Dr. Don Nerbas, McGill University: is Associate Professor and the St. Andrew’s Society/McEuen Scholarship Foundation Chair in Canadian-Scottish Studies. He is also a member of the Montreal History Group / Groupe d’histoire de Montréal. He has published widely on the politics of business and the political economy of capitalism in Canada. The principal focus of his current research centres on Cape Breton’s coal trade and the social and political history of Cape Breton’s Sydney coalfield in the 19th century, which was powerfully shaped by Scottish migration and settlement, an aspect of the entangled histories of colonialism and industrialism.
