Philip Glass does not appear in this performance.Named for the Hopi word meaning “life out of balance,” Koyaanisqatsi is a wordless cinematic meditation on the tension between nature and modern technology. Created in 1982 by filmmaker Godfrey Reggio and composer Philip Glass, the film unfolds as a mosaic of American landscapes and cityscapes, at once mesmerizing and unsettling. Performed live to picture, the immersive and monumental experience transforms film into a visceral encounter that invites reflection on how we live now.
Perhaps its best-known program, the Philip Glass Ensemble has toured Koyaanisqatsi: Live for over 40 years. A non-narrative, experimental film exploring the balance (or lack thereof) between humanity, technology, and the environment, the film has been embraced as a cult-classic with Glass’ iconic score deemed integral to its success. The film’s subject matter is as (if not more) relevant today as it was when it was released, taking audiences on a dazzling and thought-provoking ride.
