Since 2008, Sebastian Pennells has been researching the story of Ide Hill Football Club and the community from which it emerged. In trying to discover where his football club came from, he found himself uncovering a remarkable social history of the village itself - enough to write a book about.
This event opens a temporary exhibition of photographs, newspaper reports, documents and artefacts which reveal the lives behind the results.
Hear about agricultural labourers and stone diggers, families who created their own system of mutual aid when sickness could mean destitution, a vicar who helped a village organise itself, footballers lost to the First World War, a banker who wandered into a local pub and ended up helping to transform its football club, and a German prisoner of war who found acceptance in the community he had once fought against.
